Unconventional Career Path: How My Son Found a Job He Loves

My 19-year-old son chose he was going to “soup up” his Mitsubishi. My son graduated from high school a year ago. While he wished to go to school, he took a year off to find exactly what he really loves. The Mitsubishi engine was on a makeshift pulley, the car was covered in primer, and he read online mechanic blog sites in his spare time. I was sure he found his passion. He just wasn’t sure how to make the next step.

One day I took my Subaru to my mechanic for a tune-up. I told him about my son and asked him for advice about his car. He offered to interview my son and see if he could work in the shop so he could learn about cars. I was amazed that our local auto repair garage was willing to take a chance on my son, and I ran home to tell him as soon as possible!

At first my son was hesitant. He didn’t know if he could live up to the expectations of the shop owner, particularly because he does not have experience working in a garage. I motivated him to at least try for a month. I reminded him it was only volunteer work and would not take much of his time if he became interested in something else. If all else failed, I knew he would have enough knowledge to finally finish working on his Mitsubishi and get it out of my garage.

The mechanic was shocked by how much my son currently understood, particularly when working on vehicles that were manufactured in Japan. He was familiar with Japanese auto repair and was frequently able to provide the owner and fellow workers suggestions. Within a month the mechanic hired him as a fulltime Japanese auto specialist as well as provided to pay for further schooling. I couldn’t believe my son’s luck!

Because the owner offered to continue my son’s training, he began a few months after he began working. He ended up loving school. He learned Japanese auto service techniques and had the ability to train to make their shop a certified green auto repair shop. While he is concentrated on vehicle repair services, he is attempting to help the owner branch out to other vehicles such as ATVs. In just a few months he became an irreplaceable part of the shop, and the mechanic thanked me for mentioning my son to him.

Now my son is more than just a Japanese auto mechanic. He can do everything from Lexus auto repair to Honda auto repair and even some motorcycle repairs. He may even begin teaching at the school when he graduates! I’m just happy he finally got his car out of my garage at home.

I would suggest to any parent who has a son or daughter who wants mechanics to support their kids’s goals. While you may not be happy to see car parts scattered around the garage, they may be able to find a successful career as an auto mechanic. I can’t believe the auto repair near me was able to give my son such a great opportunity!
